Katharsis Mar. 10 '13 (Hook & Eye Live Set)

This week Hook & Eye played live in-studio.

Hook & Eye is the new project of Jeff MacLeod (ex the Cape May, Pale Air Singers) along with Carl Davison (drums) and Stephen Burchill (bass). Started as a solo creative outlet by Jeff, their sound is rapidly evolving from the more brooding, slow-burning basement blues documented on their debut release, the North St. EP, to that of a fierce, more explosive, rock trio. Jeff recorded the EP last summer with his long-time bandmate, Clinton St. John, and it was mixed by Arran Fisher at Acoustikitty. They are excited about sharing the North St. EP and their newest songs with the world. The official record release show is this Thursday night (Mar. 14) at Broken City and they'll soon be heading into the studio with Colin Stewart at The Hive to capture their newest material. You can get a taste of what to expect from their excellent live set.

Katharsis Jan. 15 '12 - Mark Templeton Interview

Tonight, a phone interview with Edmonton-based sound sculptor Mark Templeton. Mark played at the Epcor Centre on Thurs. Jan 19 as part of the Soundasaurus festival.

Canadian sound artist Mark Templeton utilizes acoustic instruments, found sounds and sampled material to construct textured, collage-like electronic compositions. Since the release of his critically acclaimed “Standing on a Hummingbird” in 2007, his sound has been called "pastoral," but also "painterly" in an attempt to describe how his sources are crumbled and reconstructed into new forms; a process further developed and realized on subsequent releases for Anticipate Recordings, Staalplaat and Sweat Lodge Guru.

Templeton's works have been commissioned by organizations of contemporary dance, film and audiovisual disciplines. His live performances have at times been accompanied by Edmonton-based experimental filmmaker aAron Munson's visuals. In 2009 this ongoing collaboration resulted in the release of M. Templeton & aA. Munson: Acre Loss on CD and DVD.

Templeton has performed at international festivals and alternative spaces such as MUTEK Festival (Montreal), Unsound Festival (Krakow), Eat This Festival (Utrecht), Galapagos (New York), Send + Receive Festival (Winnipeg), Half Die Festival (Rome), Café OTO (London) and Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival (Montreal).

Along with filmmaker/photographer Kyle Armstrong Mark presented EXTENSIONS - an audiovisual performance at the Epcor Centre. EXTENSIONS refering to McLuhan’s book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. The performance took place on Thursday, January 19th. The show was both aurally and visually arresting with moments of blissful pastoral beauty and gut-rumbling low frequency noise. Mark's wizardry with the tape loops and effects were mesmerizing and Kyle's visual imagery (looped/spliced/processed film footage etc.) was not just a beautiful visual accompaniment, but visually engaging, both conveying ideas and affecting emotions. The set totally lived up to my expectations. Hopefully it will be recorded for posterity and released in the future.

The interview starts at about the 43 minute mark of the recording and lasts for about 40 minutes. Katharsis Sept. 26 '10

They were in to promote their upcoming CD release Sept. 30 at the Marquee Room. Memory Screen is an exciting new local 'post-rock' (for lack of a better term) project headed up by uber-talented Calgary musician Mark Webber. For his live shows he's assembled an impressive group of players: Alex Kurth - guitar (Lint, Monkey, etc.), Henry Hsieh - Bass (Monkey, Beja Floer, etc.), Jeff Macleod - percussion (The Cape May, Pale Air Singers, etc.), and Clea Anaïs - Cello (The Consonant C, Thighs, Dojo Workhorse, Woodpigeon, Brock Geiger, etc.) During their relatively short incarnation they have already created quite a bit of buzz around town with their dynamic and super-tight live show.

The show went like this: Christopher Bissonnette - Travelling Light, Tim Hecker - Arctic Lover's Rock (Part 2) + The Work of Art in the Age of Cultural Overproduction, Mark Templeton - Broken & Remade, Arden - Grafted Guitars of Unopened Train Doors, Ian D. Mucci - April L'oochi Pt. 2, and This Invitation - Burning Telegraph.

Many thanks to Memory Screen for the great live set and to Kat Cardiff for teching the performance. If you can make the show on Thurs. I highly recommend you do so. With Mark relocating to Montreal shortly this will be his last gig with these players for quite a while.

Sorry for not fading out the Soft Machine sooner (yikes!) Here's the show recording in mp3 and ogg.

The show actually started with one of my favourite Mount Eerie tracks, “Wooly Mammoth's Absence” from Seven New Songs, after which I was graced with a special treat: a live phone interview with Mr. Mount Eerie (Phil Elverum). The Anacortes, Washington based artist discussed his upcoming Sled Island appearance (w/ Woodpigeon June 25 @ Central United Church), his annual Anacortes-themed What the Heck Fest, the Anacortes arts-hub The Department of Safety, running his creative proprietorship (P.W. Elverum & Sun), and touched on the idea of digital music versus tangible physical works of art. Thanks to Phil and to BeatRoute for facilitating the interview.
