Tonight, a phone interview with Edmonton-based sound sculptor Mark Templeton. Mark played at the Epcor Centre on Thurs. Jan 19 as part of the Soundasaurus festival.

Canadian sound artist Mark Templeton utilizes acoustic instruments, found sounds and sampled material to construct textured, collage-like electronic compositions. Since the release of his critically acclaimed “Standing on a Hummingbird” in 2007, his sound has been called "pastoral," but also "painterly" in an attempt to describe how his sources are crumbled and reconstructed into new forms; a process further developed and realized on subsequent releases for Anticipate Recordings, Staalplaat and Sweat Lodge Guru.

Templeton's works have been commissioned by organizations of contemporary dance, film and audiovisual disciplines. His live performances have at times been accompanied by Edmonton-based experimental filmmaker aAron Munson's visuals. In 2009 this ongoing collaboration resulted in the release of M. Templeton & aA. Munson: Acre Loss on CD and DVD.

Templeton has performed at international festivals and alternative spaces such as MUTEK Festival (Montreal), Unsound Festival (Krakow), Eat This Festival (Utrecht), Galapagos (New York), Send + Receive Festival (Winnipeg), Half Die Festival (Rome), Café OTO (London) and Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival (Montreal).

Along with filmmaker/photographer Kyle Armstrong Mark presented EXTENSIONS - an audiovisual performance at the Epcor Centre. EXTENSIONS refering to McLuhan’s book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. The performance took place on Thursday, January 19th. The show was both aurally and visually arresting with moments of blissful pastoral beauty and gut-rumbling low frequency noise. Mark's wizardry with the tape loops and effects were mesmerizing and Kyle's visual imagery (looped/spliced/processed film footage etc.) was not just a beautiful visual accompaniment, but visually engaging, both conveying ideas and affecting emotions. The set totally lived up to my expectations. Hopefully it will be recorded for posterity and released in the future.

The interview starts at about the 43 minute mark of the recording and lasts for about 40 minutes. CJSW 2011 Funding Drive

It's here again; my annual funding drive show is Sunday October 23 from 8pm-midnight and the funding drive only goes until Friday. The theme this year is cjsw 90.9fm Call of the Dial! (with artwork by Dirty Donny)

For one week every year we take a break from being the best radio station anywhere, and ask you, our listeners, to help us out.

All the money raised during our annual Funding Drive campaign goes towards our capital budget (like it always does), paying for everything from upgrading our web servers (we're really trying to keep ahead of the exponential growth in the number of people trying to listen online), to maintaining our 4000 watt fm broadcast tower, to our CD players (commercial grade cd players and parts are becoming harder to source), our headphones, and all the other costs associated with running a radio station. For more info on the why's of funding drive please read this.

Operators are standing by to take your calls. If you would like to donate on my show but won't be able to listen (too busy, on the other side of the world, etc.), we'd be happy to accept your pledge online.

As in previous years, there is a great variety of pledge incentives. I have compiled some virtual (downloadable) funding drive compilations. For each paid $25 pledge amount you a get an emailed link to the zip file (ex. $25 = one zip file of your choice, $100 = all 4). I will be able to offer some additional cd's, LP's, or other goodies as incentives for pledges over $75. I have set a bunch of great cd's and vinyl records aside (at least I think they're great... for example Experimedia was very generous to us this year). For those of you outside of Calgary, the station will mail your pledge incentives to you.

Feel free to donate early and donate often; it all goes to the same worthy cause: keeping cjsw in good financial shape and on the air for another year. Certain incentives do tend to go fast (ex. women's t-shirts) so if you want to ensure the best selection feel free not to wait for my show on Sunday.

CJSW 2010 Funding Drive

This year's annual funding drive is now officially over.

Thanks so much for your support! We managed to raise $1145 during my funding drive show and broke the $70000 mark. If you missed it feel free to listen to the show recording in mp3 or ogg format.

As of 7pm Fri. Oct. 29 the pledge total was at approximately $182000. Although the funding drive is officially over you can still donate on line.

On top of all kinds of great new pledge incentives, I made some virtual mix compilations (electronic/IDM, rock, neo-classical/experimental, and quiet/dreamy pop & folk, etc. - typical Katharsis fare), tracks released in the past year that have caught my ear. For each paid $25 pledge amount you a get an emailed link to a zip file containing the music files to download. (ex. $25 = one zip file of your choice, $200 = all 8)

If you have not yet paid your pledge please do by 12pm Nov. 19 so that you can have your name included for the various grand prize draws. Certain incentives do tend to go fast (ex. women's t-shirts) so if you want to ensure the best selection don't wait.

CJSW is a non-profit organization that strives to provide diverse programming. Our schedule spans awarding winning news and spoken word, local musicians and artistic endeavors, multicultural programming and any style of music you can imagine.

The station receives roughly half of its funding from an undergraduate student levy at the University of Calgary. This levy pays for the day-to-day operation of the station, but to cover the capital expenditures, some of the surprise costs, or upgrading equipment, we need to have a little extra money available. This is where the CJSW Funding Drive comes in…

The very first CJSW Funding Drive took place to help us buy the necessary equipment to become a full FM station, and ever since it has been our only source of funds for capital expenditures. It has allowed us to pay for the upgrading of our production facilities, including the purchase of new production boards and computers, and increase our web presence and streaming capabilities. As we prepare for new advances in radio in the next few years, your generous donations provide the means by which we are able to continue our quest to be one of the finest campus/community radio stations anywhere.

The Funding Drive takes place in the last week of October, where we suspend our regular programming and ask for listener support in the form of cash/credit/debit donations and subscriptions in exchange for another year of outstanding radio and great CJSW swag.

This is a big year for us. The biggest news since the last Funding Drive is that CJSW moved into our new offices and studios. If you are able feel free to come up during the Funding Drive to see the fantastic space that was built thanks to your generous support over the years!

Your support has also helped CJSW expand its presence in the community! Our coverage leading up to the now just passed municipal election was an excellent resource for Calgarians and featured recorded interviews with almost all mayoral and aldermanic candidates. CJSW has completed a tower study to increase our wattage and relocate our tower over the next year. We are also actively expanding our website, offering more podcasts and improving the listening options on-line.

CJSW continues to be everywhere - supporting Calgary's many festivals and community events. We help local bands by having them play live sessions on the radio and mailing out new records to radio stations across Canada. They were in to promote their upcoming CD release Sept. 30 at the Marquee Room. Memory Screen is an exciting new local 'post-rock' (for lack of a better term) project headed up by uber-talented Calgary musician Mark Webber. For his live shows he's assembled an impressive group of players: Alex Kurth - guitar (Lint, Monkey, etc.), Henry Hsieh - Bass (Monkey, Beja Floer, etc.), Jeff Macleod - percussion (The Cape May, Pale Air Singers, etc.), and Clea Anaïs - Cello (The Consonant C, Thighs, Dojo Workhorse, Woodpigeon, Brock Geiger, etc.) During their relatively short incarnation they have already created quite a bit of buzz around town with their dynamic and super-tight live show.

I have actually been sitting on this list since the new year and had intended to add short descriptions/reviews of each of these (reviews for some were published in BeatRoute last year) but I just haven't had the time and sadly probably won't for a long time. Some googling will lead you to much better reviews of these than I could ever write and these records are deserving of the highest calibre of writing to describe them.

Yes, it's official; as part of the cjsw schedule revamp Katharsis is moving to Sunday evenings from 8-10pm. I've been on Monday nights for a long time so it's a big change for me but I'm looking forward to it (getting to bed at a decent time after my show will be nice). Similar to Monday nights, Sunday nights are down-time for a lot of people; a chance to relax and prepare for the oncoming week. I think it's a well-suited time slot for Katharsis. I took the night off to go see Do Make Say Think, a long-time favourite. Honestly, their latest album didn't do much for me. Live they seem to be just as solid as ever but not really breaking new ground musically. Their live show has become a bit rote which is kind of sad. The exceptions were their opening guises as Charles Spearan's Happiness Project (Charles Spearan's novel "science project" - music not only inspired by interviews of his neighbours but that actually mimics the cadence and inflection of the interview voice recordings) and Years, Ohad Benchetrit's solo project. Benchetrit started off solo acoustic, with some great Fayhey-esq instrumental folk from his album of last year (one of my favourites of the year) but eventually brought his DMST-bandmates out to provide the highlight set of the evening for me.

As always Craig did a fantastic showfill in my absence.
